Spray Paint Day

All my little ideas for my hobby room are coming together.  Yesterday Ara and I went to Lowe's/Home Depot for roofing supplies and I snagged the spray paint for an old school desk to transform into a spunky sewing machine table.  They only had two cans of the color I wanted.  So instead of painting the desk...I painted an ugly brown bulletin board.  Mediterranean Blue.  As soon as it dries---cork sucks up a lot of paint, even with primer---the frame is getting painted white.  Then I am tagging an old metal trashcan that came from Ara's grandma's basement and a flower pot to match two Southern Living pots I already have.  Cole has some red spray paint leftover from his project---that I may use to spray the tacks so I have some bright red tacks on my cool blue bulletin board.
I also corralled all the craft supplies---now the sorting begins.

On another note--Ara got the roof done.  Hurricane Irena damaged parts of the ridge vent, and he finished replacing it all today.  He was puking in the backyard--not pretty--due to heat exhaustion.  I really had a hard time getting him to sit still after that.  I know he is itching to mow the yard now, but I won't let him.  Twice now he's been off the couch and I found him outside---so reminds me of Cole's toddlers years at nap time.

upcoming projects

Today I stopped in at JoAnns and used my 40% off coupon to get some cotton holiday sparkle yarn...hoping to stitch up some quick snowflake dishcloths for Christmas.

And then I got these two swatches to maybe re-do my bench in.  I have the striped fabric below, but I'm not really feeling it...or I have some red toille in a box somewhere.  Open to suggestions, any ideas?

Some steel wool and quick coat of paint will fix this right up.

The frames from the fireplace mantle are apart and ready for a coat of black spray paint.

Sewing Room

About month ago I asked Ara if I could set up a table in Jake's old room to do some sewing and he said NO. Well slowly I have been setting stuff up little by little and I almost have my sewing room completely ready to roll.  I am so excited.
Still To Do:
Spray Paint an old school desk for a sewing table--still deciding on a color
Hang a bulletin board--transform it from drab to flab--any idea
Gather up the rest of my scattered craft stuff--and make it look cutesy and not cluttered.

Productive Labor Day Weedend...so far

Ara got the ridge vent over the garage fixed.  I hated him being up there balancing and hammering all by himself.  But I am glad he is handy.  I think he does a better job than someone we would hire.
I finally took all my frames apart to prep them for painting and then discovered that I only have glossy black paint on hand.  Time for a paint run to pick up some flat black.  We did have paint on flat black in a can so I did repaint the rusty, tetanus scary, planter  and did a quick coat on the park bench iron parts and touched up an old milk can. Tomorrow I plan on repainting the wooden parts red.  Loving this weather, it's perfect for getting all these projects done.  I have an indoor bench that I want to do something with---debating on painting it with outdoor paint and recovering the cushion with outdoor fabric to put on the back screened in porch---but the cats will just get it all furry...so I don't know.  I may just darken up the wood and pop some new fabric on it and move it upstairs.
Today was a relaxing beach day and cookout with the neighbors.  I am lobster pink, except for my face...that spf in bare minerals really works.

Hurricane Irene Survival

Hurricane Prep:
Thursday, on my way to work, I stopped and got 4 cases of water, tuna, bread, granola bars, a bag of apples, and canned chicken to add to my Hurricane pantry.  Friday I had to go to two different Ace Hardware stores to find the lantern battery that I needed and batteries.  And then I spent the rest of the day doing laundry and baking cookies.  I scrubbed down both tubs, because I thought I would end up filling them with water right before the storm hit us---but I ended up just filling a 2.5 bushel tub of water.  Because we knew the storm was coming, I didn't do my normal grocery restocking so there were only a few perishables in the fridge.
During the Hurricane:
We woke up to rain that had started sometime in the middle of the night.  The wind picked up around noon.  I ended up finishing my laundry and we tried to eat the leftovers up and watch movies while we hunkered down. Our power went out around 4:00pm on Sat.  I did get my treadmill workout in before the power cut out :)  I thought the worst of it would be past us by 6:00pm but the wind seemed to pick up after dark.  The house was taking a beating until well after 1:00 am.  We did hear a terrible scraping sound against our window...I thought it was a tree branch, but it ended up being the window screen coming off.  It managed to hit the Subaru and ended up in the neighbors yard along with Andrea's window screen.
After the Hurricane:
Lost two window screens and had one leaky window to fix and the ridge vent on the roof over the garage peeled up. On Monday, I went to work to charge our phones, and bought some ice on the way home to restock the coolers. The freezer was 40 degrees that morning and everything was thawing so we moved it to coolers.  I borrowed a Coleman Max cooler from a friend at work....and that cooler is awesome.  We did play some Uno, and BS (card game that Andrea picked up in IN).  But the games only lasted about a day and then everyone was just grumpy and frustrated.  Both of the kids, played with all the younger neighbors.  They did kickball, water guns, and sidewalk chalk. Neighbors were circled in lawn chairs making the best of it.   I tried to curl my hair with foam rollers overnight---not so cute.  I even hand washed some towels because they were getting quite smelly.  That was a total body workout.  Weds Andi and I headed to the library to charge our phones, while we were there our power kicked on.   During the whole time I was very creative.  We only had our grill to cook with.  I managed to bake some bread roll dough that was thawed from the freezer.  I even used up the last of the cream cheese, sour cream, some Parmesan and spinach to make a spinach dip that we cooked in a cake pan on the grill.  We even made foil  pouches to roast the thawed out cauliflower and other veggies.  We made foil dinners out of a bag of snap peas and carrots, cube steaks and cream of mushroom.  We had kielbasa to add to the baked rolls for breakfast sandwiches.  I marinated pork chops in a tangy mustard ranch marinade.  We made orange juice from the thawed concentrate to go with dinner one night and then I used the rest mixed with Worcestershire sauce to marinade a London Broil.  I still have one London Broil to cook tomorrow night for fajitas or something.  We are eating lots of leftover grilled food now that the power is back on. We only lost less than a half  a gallon of milk and some onions that I had prechopped.  I kept all my vinegar based condiments and tried to use up the other salad dressing first.  Making homemade cookies was a lifesaver on the comfort food front.  I do wish I had more chocolate in the house....a Hershey bar would have hit the spot.

awesome week six

Today's weigh in was another 2 pounds down in what seemed like a lousy dieting week.  But the best part is the this week I lost an amazing 7 pounds of fat and gained 2 pounds of muscle and the rest is water.  This brings my total weight loss to 13.5 pounds...That's a loss of 15 pounds of fat total and .5 pounds of water loss from my start date and up 2 pounds of muscle mass.  I now have moved from the Low Cal Diet of 800 calories to the Modified Low Cal Diet of 1200 calories a day.  Of all the things to eat I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  I don't even like PBJ's, but that's what I'm craving.
Yay Me!

I took Andi to deposit her very first paycheck.  And then we hit TJMaxx and checked out the handbags and shoes.  She eyed an orange leather backpack, that I've got to sneak back and buy for one of her birthday gifts.  Fingers crossed that it will still be there tomorrow.  And I have at least two - no fours pair of shoes on my mind that may find their way in the cart too.

Oh I don't know if I blogged it, but Andi's job was at a local preschool...she filled in as the substitute babysitter for the instructors elementary age kids.  She spent a week doing arts and crafts with the kiddos while the regular girl was on vacation.  I am so proud of her.  She had a blast.  She put all her $ plus her last 4 allowances in the bank.  She's saving for a car.

I am seriously thinking of spray painting all of the family photo frames in the house black.  I'm sick of the chintzy gold and greens that they are.  Got a $5 Ace reward card burning a hole in my wallet.  Ara and I both have Friday off....so maybe that will be my weekend project.

My Cactus Mission

At work we have tiny cactus that is barely holding.  Everyone is convinced that it is dead, and keeps pulling it out of its pot so now the roots are in shreds.  I moved it to a sunny location a couple of weeks ago and was commenting on how good it is looking....And they insist it's dead.  Well dead doesn't look pink and green to me.  I was holding the pot and evil co-worker asked me to hand it to him.  He shook it upside down over the trash.  I shrieked.  So now the poor thing is traumatized.  I slammed the pot back down on the window sill and stomped off.  He eventually dug it out of the trash and brought it to my desk. I am determined to save this cactus! just to prove them wrong.  Even if I have to go out and buy another replacement.  So now it is resting comfortably on my window sill...and I got new soil and root stimulator powder at the store.  It gets three days in ICU and then I am re potting it.
